Your child’s grandparents are injurious to your health!

Junk food is bad for health!!!

Heard this before???

I am sure you have heard this one so much that your ears are bleeding by now!

BUT,

Who gave you the Gyan (Hindi terminology for “lecture”)???

Your parents, nutritionists, friends, well wishers, health and life style bloggers and vloggers!

Imagine whom I got it from???

Picture1

A week back, we were holidaying!!! My daughter, the husband and I!

We were travelling by rail and in the 6 hrs long journey to Ranthambore (A National park in Rajasthan/India, popular for tiger sightings), I sat my daughter down for her lunch!

I unpacked her lunched and the madam that my daughter is becoming, asked-

“Deepa mumma what is in lunch for Tuktuk?”

{Insight: We call her Tuktuk at home primarily for the way she would wobble and walk (Hindi SLANG terminology for the way a baby walks, almost ready to topple over at each step) when she was little! PS: She was a baby only until she was 6 months old! After that she has taken the place of my Daadi (English meaning-paternal Grandmum) and better!}

Anyway,

So, I told her that for lunch there’s 1 Aaloo (potato) Paraatha (puff pastries) and 1 Daal (lentil) Paraatha for her lunch (I was carrying home cooked food for her lunch while the husband and I had plans to buy something off the Pantry!)

She seemed satisfied with the answer! And a minute later was happily munching onto her Paratha and Dahi (yogurt) combo.

While she got busy with her lunch, the husband and I weren’t really up for proper lunch!

Thus, a packet of Lays Chips were picked from our travel bag!

Instantly and Unexpectedly, the focus of my 2.5 yr old shifted from her lunch to our packet of chips!

I was expecting her to ask for the chips and I was all prepared to oblige! After all its VACATION MODE ON and one can eat junk occasionally right????

WRONG!!!!

She didn’t want it at all!

In fact……..

Rather,

She said-

“Deepa Mumma, Madhav Papa….”with her eyes rolling in disquiet”…Please don’t eat this!”

NOTE: We adults never listen to our children and then when they grow up they don’t listen to us! The eff-ing cycle of life!

We carried on, trying to justify our junk indulgence by saying- “Tuku baby we forgot to carry lunch for us and now mumma papa are hungry so we are eating this!”

Ever so spontaneous Tuktuk replied- “I have two parathas! Share with me! Sharing is good manners!”

We still didn’t listen and tried to reason it out with her! We wont eat our baby’s parathas (they were anyway too little in size/custom made for the Madam Daughter)!

She was infuriated by our indifference!

Then, SHE FROWNED AND SAID-

“JUNK FOOD IS BAD FOR HEALTH! You will become WEAK with all this DIRTY food”

DUDE…..

WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED!!!

The husband and I exchanged looks of amusement and stress and were like wat the …..

Carefully, we then asked-

“Darling, who told you this?”

She very politely answered-

“Naani Mumma (Maternal Grandmother) said to me that never eat junk food! It is bad for health and tell mumma papa also to eat fresh food!!!”

We, with a lot of courage took those words in and braced ourselves for what lies ahead of us!

We abruptly put the chips away and unwillingly took a little bite each of her food and once she was convinced she got back to her lunch!

AND, my husband and I quietly looked out of the window not knowing what had hit us!

THE VACATION CONTINUED! THE VACATION INCLUDED ZERO JUNK FOOD!
